While visiting Tambov, a small city about 300 miles south of Moscow, I noticed an interesting wedding trend that I first saw in Moscow. Instead of carving out initials in the bark of a tree or spray painting it beneath a bridge, couples would buy a lock, attach it to a rail on a bridge and throw away the key, as a symbolic gesture of their eternal love. While this does sound romantic and slightly more eco-friendly, I foresee a potential structural problem with hundreds of locks, some of which were quite elaborate and heavy, hanging off of bridges.
Seeing a rainbow just as I boarded the train back to Moscow was a nice parting gift as well.
